Sam Toft
Sam Toft is an English painter, based in Brighton, an area that features regularly in her work. Sam’s art is known for its warm, light brand of humour, focusing on the more eccentric side of English coastal life. Sam’s art is uplifting, designed to raise a smile on a dark day. She likes to use oil-pastel crayons. She also likes to work quickly. Sam Toft prints all take place in an imaginary world of her own creation. Its inhabitants are Ernest Hemmingway Mustard, his wife Violet, and their many animal friends. They like to go to Brighton beach, but you’re just as likely to find them anywhere in the world. Sam Toft prints give us new insights into Mr Mustard’s life. Some days are harder than others, but they’re always likely to raise a smile. The affection that he has for his wife has never diminished, even after all these years. Before she found art, Sam worked at many different jobs, including a fire extinguisher salesperson and a silver service waitress. On finding fame through art, Sam said. ‘It’s always an absolute thrill to wander into a small shop in an unknown town and see one of my cards. I’ll never tire of that.
